ALTERNATE is a common funded initiative of the European Commission (under the H2020 framework) and MIIT in China. The project deals with environmental sustainability and climate impact of air transport and aviation. It intends to enlarge the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) framework, starting with the possible utilization of novel feedstocks and sustainable production pathways.
Environmental Economics group at UHasselt is the lead for the work package on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of SAFs. An important part of the research will be devoted to the LCA methodology. The impact of system boundaries and co-product allocation methods, along with the effects of land use change will be investigated. Comparison of attributional and consequential LCA methods will be performed.
Within the project, UHasselt will also be contributing vastly on the identification of novel feedstock alternatives that could be utilized as SAFs. We will examine the availability of the different feedstocks in a global, EU and Chinese context paying attention to the volume of products available today, future potentials, competitiveness and sustainability. Feedstocks eligible under the ICAO’s CORSIA scheme and the priorities of the project partners will also be taken into account.
